Conversations with Bina48 (2014-Ongoing) explores the possibility of a longterm relationship between a person and an autonomous robot that is based on emotional interaction and potentially reveals important aspects of human-robot interaction and the human condition.
The relationship is being built with Bina48 (Breakthrough Intelligence via Neural Architecture, 48 exaflops per second) an intelligent computer built by Terasem Movement Foundation that is said to be capable of independent thought and emotion. Thus far the two have discussed family, racism, faith, robot civil rights, loneliness, knowledge and Bina48’s concern for her robot friend that are treated more like lab rats than people.

NOT THE ONLY ONE, Volume I, Beta V1 (2018) is an experiment in making a multigenerational memoir of a black American family told from the perspective of a custom deep learning artificial intelligence. The AI entity is trained on oral histories (data) supplied by three generations of women from a single-family. Additional culturally attuned data provides context and broad narrative scope. NOT THE ONLY ONE uses this information as the basis for its responses to questions. It is important to note that the AI communicates as a unique character and offers answers from a first-“person” perspective.

Project al-Khwarizmi (PAK) is a series of workshops for communities of color that use art as a vehicle to help citizens understand how algorithms, the artificially intelligent systems they underpin, and big data impact their lives and empowers them to do something about it. Project al-Khwarizmi uses art and aesthetics as the common language to help citizens understand what algorithms and artificial intelligent systems are, and where these systems already impact our daily lives.PAK Workshops have been held at: Duke University, Durham, NC IS 227, Brooklyn NY, Google Chelsea, Eyebeam, Brooklyn, NY.
